Zovia Dosage

You must take your Zovia dosage correctly, as missing pills increases your risk of pregnancy. The pills are taken once daily, at the same time each day. What you should do if you miss any Zovia doses depends on several factors, such as how many pills you have missed, whether you are a day 1 starter or a Sunday starter, and where you are in your cycle.

Zovia Dosage: An Introduction

There is only one standard way to take Zovia® (ethynodiol diacetate/ethinyl estradiol). As always, do not adjust your Zovia dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so. Although birth control pills are extremely effective when taken as directed, their effectiveness decreases significantly if you take them incorrectly.

Basic Zovia Dosing Instructions

Starting at the beginning of the pack, take one tablet every day, at the same time each day. Each pack will last for four weeks (28 days). After you finish one pack, immediately start a new one the next day. Do not let any days pass between packs, even if you are still having your period (this may take a little planning, as you will need a new pack on hand). The first 21 tablets contain the active ingredients. The last seven tablets do not contain any active ingredients. During this last week, your body gets a little break from the hormones, allowing you to have a period.

Starting Zovia

When you take Zovia for the first time, you can start it two different ways:

  • Day 1 start -- Start Zovia on the first day of your period (within 24 hours of the start of menstrual bleeding). You will be protected from pregnancy from the start, and no backup birth control is needed. If your period happens to start on a Sunday, treat this as a day 1 start, not a Sunday start.

  • Sunday start -- Start Zovia on the first Sunday after your period starts (even if you are still having your period). Starting on Sunday may decrease the chance that you will have your periods on the weekends, although not all women find this to be the case. You will need to use a backup method of birth control for the first seven days of the first pack.

If you choose a Sunday start, you will start every pack of Zovia on Sundays. If you choose a day 1 start, you will start each pack on your initial start day (for instance, if you first started Zovia on a Tuesday, you will start every pack on a Tuesday).

Some healthcare providers may suggest other ways to start Zovia, such as starting in the middle of the cycle. Make sure to follow your healthcare provider's instructions in such situations.
