Generic Zovia

There is currently no generic Zovia available on the market. In fact, Zovia is a generic version of Demulen, a birth control pill that is no longer available. Kelnor is another birth control pill that is equivalent to Zovia. It is another generic version of Demulen (it is not, however, a generic version of Zovia or vice versa).

Is Generic Zovia Available?

Zovia® (ethynodiol diacetate/ethinyl estradiol) is a birth control pill (oral contraceptive). It is both a monophasic and a combined oral contraceptive. It is a "combined" oral contraceptive because it contains two different hormones, and "monophasic" because it contains only one strength of hormones in each pack (unlike biphasic and triphasic pills, which have different phases of pills that contain different strengths of hormones).

Zovia is made by Watson Pharmaceuticals. It comes in two different strengths: Zovia 1/35 and Zovia 1/50. Technically, Zovia is a generic version of Demulen®, a birth control pill that is no longer available.

What About Kelnor?

Kelnor™ (made by Barr Pharmaceuticals) is another generic birth control pill that is equivalent to Zovia. Kelnor is not a generic version of Zovia (or the other way around). Instead, both Kelnor and Zovia are generic versions of Demulen (which is no longer available). The generic names of birth control pills can be confusing -- the names are long and several different products can have the same generic name, even though they have different strengths. To help avoid confusion, manufacturers of generic birth control pills give their versions a "brand name." These products are still generics, even though they seem like brand-name products, due to their names.

Kelnor comes only in the 1/35 strength; it does not come in the 1/50 strength.
