Zalcitabine Interactions Explained

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when zalcitabine is combined with any of the drugs listed above.
 
Antacids With Magnesium or Aluminum
Antacids that contain magnesium or aluminum can decrease the absorption of zalcitabine into your bloodstream (making it less effective). Do not take these medications at the same time.
 
Certain Antibiotics or Antifungals
Some antibiotics may increase the risk of peripheral neuropathy (unusual sensations, such as burning, tingling, numbness, or pain, in the feet or hands) or other zalcitabine side effects. In general, it is best to avoid taking these medications together if possible.
 
Cisplatin (Platinol)
Taking zalcitabine with cisplatin may increase the risk of peripheral neuropathy (unusual sensations, such as burning, tingling, numbness, or pain, in the hands or feet). If possible, these medications should not be used together.
 
Cimetidine (Tagamet)
Cimetidine can increase the level of zalcitabine in your blood, increasing your risk of side effects. Your healthcare provider may recommend a lower zalcitabine dose or may recommend one of the many alternatives to cimetidine.
 
Didanosine (Videx)
Taking zalcitabine with didanosine may increase the risk of peripheral neuropathy (unusual sensations, such as burning, tingling, numbness, or pain, in the hands or feet). If possible, these medications should not be used together.
 
Disulfiram (Antabuse)
Taking zalcitabine with disulfiram may increase the risk of peripheral neuropathy (unusual sensations, such as burning, tingling, numbness, or pain, in the hands or feet). If possible, these medications should not be used together.
