Ulipristal Dosage

When taking ulipristal for preventing pregnancy, there is only one standard dosage. One ulipristal pill should be taken within 120 hours (five days) after unprotected sex or birth control failure. The sooner you take this emergency contraceptive, the more effective it is at preventing pregnancy. If you vomit within three hours of taking ulipristal, you may need to take a second pill.

An Introduction to Your Dosage of Ulipristal

There is only one dose of ulipristal acetate (ella®). As is always the case, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

Ulipristal Dosing for Emergency Contraception

Ulipristal comes in a package containing one tablet (30 mg). This tablet should be taken as soon as possible within 120 hours (five days) after unprotected sex or birth control failure. The sooner you take ulipristal, the more effective it is at preventing pregnancy.

Do not take ulipristal if you are already pregnant or think you might already be pregnant (see Ella and Pregnancy).

General Information on Taking Ulipristal

Some considerations for women taking ulipristal include the following:

  • Ulipristal requires a prescription from your healthcare provider.

  • If you vomit within three hours of taking ulipristal, contact your healthcare provider right away to see if you need to take another dose.

  • Ulipristal can be taken at any point in the menstrual cycle.

  • Ulipristal should not be used as your main form of birth control, because other methods of birth control are usually much more effective.

  • Because ulipristal blocks the effects of progesterone, it theoretically could decrease the effectiveness of routine birth control pills. After using ulipristal, a barrier method of contraception (like a condom) should be used with any other sexual intercourse that occurs during that same menstrual cycle.

  • For the medication to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed.

  • If you are unsure about anything related to your dosage of ulipristal, please talk with your healthcare provider, nurse, or pharmacist.
