Side Effects of Ulipristal

Although most people do not experience problems when taking ulipristal, side effects are possible. Common ones include headaches, nausea, and fatigue. Serious problems have also been known to occur with this emergency contraceptive. Notify your healthcare provider right away if you experience difficulty breathing, severe lower abdominal (stomach) pain, or other potentially dangerous side effects.

An Introduction to Side Effects of Ulipristal

As with any medicine, ulipristal acetate (ella®) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes this contraceptive will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with ulipristal. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)

Serious Ulipristal Side Effects

Some side effects with ulipristal, while occurring infrequently, are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:

  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:

    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Unexplained swelling, especially of the mouth, lips, or throat
    • Wheezing or difficulty breathing
    • Difficulty swallowing.

  • Vomiting within three hours of taking an ulipristal tablet (you may have vomited up the tablet). Your healthcare provider may prescribe you another dose to take.

  • Signs of an ectopic pregnancy (a "tubal" pregnancy), such as severe lower abdominal pain (stomach pain).

It should be noted that these side effects rarely occurred in clinical studies, and there is a good chance that they are completely unrelated to ulipristal.
