Trichomoniasis is a common sexually transmitted disease that often produces no symptoms. It is caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis and is primarily an infection of the urogenital tract. A healthcare provider can diagnose trichomoniasis by performing laboratory tests on fluid samples from the vagina or penis. Because men can transmit it to their sex partners even when they don't have any symptoms, health experts recommend that both partners be treated with a single dose of metronidazole to get rid of the parasite.
