Trichomoniasis is a common sexually transmitted infection that is caused by a parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis. The vagina is the most common place for the infection in women, and the urethra is the most common place in men. Most men do not develop symptoms, but women may experience discomfort during sex, painful urination, and heavy yellow-green or gray vaginal discharge. Treatment for trichomoniasis usually involves a single dose of the drug metronidazole.
