Generic Tri-Norinyl

There are two generic versions of Tri-Norinyl available; they are sold under the names Aranelle and Leena. The FDA has assigned these generic Tri-Norinyl products an "AB" rating, meaning that the generics are as good as the brand-name medication. However, generics are allowed to have different inactive ingredients (such as fillers or dyes) than the brand-name medication, which may cause problems in people with allergies or sensitivities.

Is Generic Tri-Norinyl Available?

Tri-Norinyl^® (norethindrone/ethinyl estradiol) is a birth control pill (oral contraceptive) that is only available with a prescription. It is a "triphasic" birth control pill, which means that it has three different phases of pills that contain different strengths of hormones in each pack (plus the last week of inactive pills that do not contain any hormones).

Tri-Norinyl is made by Watson Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Although generic Tri-Norinyl is available, it is sold under what seems like two other brand names, rather than the usual "generic" name.

Generic Tri-Norinyl Naming

At this time, generic Tri-Norinyl is sold under the names Aranelle™ and Leena^®. The generic names of birth control pills can be very confusing -- the names are long, and several different products can have the same generic name (even though they are very different products). To help avoid confusion, manufacturers of generic birth control pills give their versions a "brand name." These products are still generics, even though they seem like brand-name products, due to their names.

Aranelle is made by Barr Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Leena is made by Watson Pharmaceuticals, Inc., the same company that makes brand-name Tri-Norinyl.
