What Is Tri-Estarylla Used For?

How Does It Work?

As mentioned, Tri-Estarylla is a combined oral contraceptive, which means it is a birth control pill that contains two different types of hormones. It contains both an estrogen (ethinyl estradiol) and a progestin (norgestimate). The hormones in Tri-Estarylla prevent pregnancy primarily by stopping ovulation (the maturation and release of eggs from the ovaries).

However, it also works to prevent pregnancy in two other, minor ways. Tri-Estarylla changes the cervical mucus (the fluid of the cervix, which is the lower, narrow part of the uterus that is connected to the vagina), making it more difficult for sperm to enter the uterus. Lastly, Tri-Estarylla alters the lining of the uterus (the endometrium), making it less receptive to an embryo.

Tri-Estarylla is a triphasic birth control pill, which means there are three different "phases" of pills in each pack, plus the last week of tablets that do not contain any active ingredients. Each week has a different amount of the progestin hormone in Tri-Estarylla. This is why it is important to take the pills in the correct order.

Is It Safe for Children and Teens to Use Tri-Estarylla?

Tri-Estarylla is approved for use in women of reproductive age. This means that it is not approved for use in girls who have not yet had their first menstrual period. For treating acne, it is approved only for women age 15 and older who have had their first menstrual period.

What About Off-Label Uses?

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend this product for something other than contraception (or the treatment of acne in addition to contraception). This is called an "off-label" use. At this time, off-label Tri-Estarylla uses include the treatment of the following conditions:

  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Painful menstrual periods
  • Irregular menstrual periods
  • Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).
