Other Drugs That Can Interact With Tipranavir

Meperidine
Combining tipranavir and meperidine can cause a buildup of toxic meperidine metabolites. In general, these medications should not be taken together.

Medications With Anticoagulant or Antiplatelet Activity
Combining tipranavir with medications that have anticoagulant or antiplatelet activity could increase the risk of bleeding, including dangerous internal bleeding. Check with your healthcare provider before taking these medications together.

Methadone
Tipranavir can decrease the level of methadone in your blood, possibly making it less effective. Your healthcare provider may need to increase your methadone dosage to prevent this interaction from occurring.

Metronidazole
Tipranavir capsules contain alcohol, which can cause severe reactions if combined with metronidazole.

Oral Diabetes Medications
Tipranavir can interact with many diabetes medications that are taken by mouth. It is a good idea to monitor your blood sugar very closely when starting or stopping tipranavir or when changing your tipranavir dosage.

Phosphodiesterase Type 5 Inhibitors (PDE5 Inhibitors)
Tipranavir can increase the level of PDE5 inhibitors in your blood, increasing your risk of side effects. Your healthcare provider may recommend a lower-than-typical dosage for your PDE5 inhibitor while you are taking tipranavir.

PDE5 inhibitors are used to treat erectile dysfunction or pulmonary arterial hypertension. Specific dosing recommendations are available for combining tipranavir with a PDE5 inhibitor if the PDE5 inhibitor is used to treat erectile dysfunction. Also, specific dosing recommendations are available for combining tipranavir with tadalafil when tadalafil is used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension.

However, at this time it is not recommended to combine tipranavir with sildenafil when sildenafil is used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, as a safe and effective dosing regimen has not yet been determined for this situation.

Pimozide
Pimozide and tipranavir should not be taken together, due to the risk of dangerous reactions.

Salmeterol
Combining salmeterol with tipranavir may increase the risk of serious side effects of salmeterol (especially heart problems). Check with your healthcare provider before combining such medications. In general, these medications should not be combined.

Some Statin Medications
Tipranavir should never be combined with lovastatin or simvastatin, due to the risk of dangerous side effects. Since tipranavir may increase the level of atorvastatin in your blood, your healthcare provider may recommend a lower atorvastatin dosage.
