Drug Interactions With Tenofovir

Medications that may cause drug interactions with tenofovir include atazanavir, cidofovir, and certain protease inhibitors. These interactions may interfere with your kidneys' ability to remove tenofovir from the blood, which can increase the drug's blood levels and increase your risk for side effects. To help prevent drug interactions with tenofovir, tell your healthcare provider about all other medications you are taking.

 

Drug Interactions With Tenofovir: An Introduction

Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (Viread®) can potentially interact with several other medicines. Some of the medicines that may lead to drug interactions with tenofovir include:
 
 
 
  • Cidofovir (Vistide®)
  • Ganciclovir (Cytovene®)
  • Valacyclovir (Valtrex®)
  • Valganciclovir (Valcyte™).

Adefovir
Adefovir may interfere with the kidneys' ability to remove tenofovir from the blood. This could lead to increased blood levels of tenofovir and increased risk of side effects of tenofovir. Check with your healthcare provider before taking these medications together.
