Information on Trichomoniasis

If you have vaginal odor; painful urination; or a heavy, yellow-green or grey vaginal discharge, you may have a sexually transmitted infection (STI) called trichomoniasis. One of the most common STIs, trichomoniasis is caused by a parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis. An estimated 7.4 million new cases occur in men and women in the United States every year.

Treatment usually consists of a one-time dose of metronidazole (Flagyl®). However, it should be noted that even with successful treatment, a person can get trichomoniasis again.
