Generic Skyla

Patents are in place that currently prevent any company from making generic Skyla. The earliest predictable date that a generic version could become available is November 2023, when the first patent is set to expire. Although levonorgestrel is sometimes called the "generic name" of Skyla, it is simply the active ingredient in the medication and not a generic version of it.

Can I Buy Generic Skyla?

Skyla™ (levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system) is a prescription intrauterine contraceptive. Once inserted, it can provide birth control for up to three years.
Skyla is made by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Inc. It is currently protected by patents that prevent any generic Skyla from being manufactured in the United States.

When Will a Generic Version Be Available?

The first patent for Skyla is set to expire in November 2023. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration actually has an earlier patent listed for Skyla, set to expire in 2015, but this appears to be the patent for the inserter only. This is the earliest predictable date that a generic version could become available.
However, other circumstances could come up to delay or shorten this exclusivity period. This could include things such as lawsuits or other patents for new Skyla uses. Once the patents expire, several companies may begin manufacturing a generic Skyla product.

Is Levonorgestrel a Generic Skyla?

Levonorgestrel is a progestin hormone. It is the active ingredient in Skyla, not a generic version of it. The hormone is also an active ingredient in several oral contraceptives, and another intrauterine contraceptive known as Mirena®.
What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of a drug is often referred to as the "generic name." The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version of a medicine, the original medicine must have gone off-patent, and another company besides the original manufacturer would make the product.
