Side Effects of Saquinavir

Some of the most common side effects of saquinavir included nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting. In most cases, side effects are minor and easily treated. However, there are a number of potentially serious saquinavir side effects that should be reported to a healthcare provider right away, such as any signs of liver problems, unexplained bleeding, or allergic reactions.

Side Effects of Saquinavir: An Introduction

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with saquinavir mesylate (Invirase®). However, not everyone who takes the drug will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider.

Side Effects of Saquinavir to Report

There are a number of side effects with saquinavir that you should report immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
 
  • Dizziness, fainting, or an irregular pulse, which may indicate an irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia)
  • A slow heart rate
  • Signs of liver damage, such as:
 
    • Fatigue or a general ill feeling (malaise)
    • Loss of appetite
    • Nausea
    • Yellowing of the whites of the eyes or skin (jaundice)
    • Tenderness near the liver (the upper-right abdomen)
    • Pale stools
 
  • High blood sugar (hyperglycemia)
  • Any unusual or unexplained bleeding
  • Changes in the distribution of fat on your body (such as a "buffalo hump")
  • High cholesterol or high triglycerides
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
 
    • A rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Swelling of the mouth or throat
    • Wheezing
    • Difficulty breathing.
