Common Reactions to Saquinavir

Common Side Effects of Saquinavir

Clinical studies have not evaluated saquinavir alone for the treatment of HIV, because it is meant to be used along with other HIV medications. In fact, the information that is available on potential side effects involves studies that used saquinavir plus ritonavir (Norvir®). Therefore, it is difficult to know if these side effects are due to saquinavir or to ritonavir.

In these studies, the most common side effects of saquinavir (plus ritonavir) included:

  • Nausea -- in up to 10.8 percent of people
  • Diarrhea -- up to 8.1 percent
  • Vomiting -- up to 7.4 percent
  • Fatigue -- up to 6.1 percent
  • Abdominal pain (stomach pain) -- up to 6.1 percent
  • Pneumonia -- up to 5.4 percent.

Other common side effects (occurring in 2 to 4 percent of people) included:

Final Thoughts on Side Effects of Saquinavir

You may experience some or none of the side effects of saquinavir listed in this article. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to tell whether any particular side effect (such as nausea) is actually caused by saquinavir or other factors. Therefore, make sure to let your healthcare provider know if you develop any side effects while taking the drug or if something "just does not seem right." While it may not be a side effect of saquinavir, your healthcare provider will be able to diagnose and treat the problem.
