Safyral

In addition to preventing pregnancy, Safyral provides supplementation with folate, a B vitamin that helps prevent birth defects if a woman happens to becomes pregnant while taking -- or shortly after stopping -- this birth control pill. This product comes in tablet form and is taken once daily. Nausea, premenstrual syndrome, and breast pain are some of the most common side effects.

  • Preventing pregnancy
  • Providing folate supplementation.

(Click Safyral Uses for more information on this topic, including possible off-label uses.)

Who Makes It?

Safyral is made by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

How Does Safyral Work?

Safyral is a combination oral contraceptive that contains an estrogen and a progestin. The drug primarily prevents pregnancy by stopping ovulation (the maturation and release of eggs from the ovaries).

However, it also prevents pregnancy in two other, minor ways. Safyral alters the cervical mucus (the fluid of the cervix, which is the lower, narrow part of the uterus that is connected to the vagina), making it more difficult for sperm to enter the uterus. Safyral also alters the lining of the uterus (the endometrium), making it less receptive to an embryo.

Safyral is different from traditional birth control pills in two important ways. First, the progesterone that it uses (drospirenone) is closely related to spironolactone, a medication used as a diuretic ("water pill").

Drospirenone has anti-androgenic activity, which means that it works against testosterone and other "male" hormones. All women have a small amount of these hormones, which can cause acne and other problems. Also, drospirenone may increase the level of potassium in your blood, which can be a problem for some women.

Safyral is also different from most other birth control pills because it contains levomefolate calcium, a folate supplement. It is recommended that women of childbearing age take a folate supplement to help prevent birth defects. If a woman becomes pregnant while taking Safyral or shortly after stopping it, the medication will provide the folate supplementation needed to help prevent birth defects.
