Safyral Side Effects

Premenstrual syndrome is the most common side effect of Safyral. Other common reactions include breast tenderness, headache, and nausea. However, most women are able to take it without any problems; if adverse reactions do occur, they are usually easy to treat. Serious side effects (such as chest pain or shortness of breath) are also possible, but they are far less common.

An Introduction to Safyral Side Effects

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with Safyral™ (drospirenone/ethinyl estradiol/levomefolate calcium). However, not everyone who uses the contraceptive will have problems. In fact, most women tolerate it well. If side effects occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can be treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Safyral. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)

Common Side Effects of Safyral

Safyral was approved based on clinical studies of Yasmin® (the exact same birth control pill without the folate), either used alone or in combination with the folate. Yasmin has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials.

In most clinical studies of medications, the side effects that occur in a group of people taking the drug are documented and then compared to those that occur in another group of people not taking the medicine (they take a placebo that does not contain any active ingredients). As a result, it is possible to see what side effects occur, how often they appear, and how they compare to the group not taking the medicine.

However, it is not possible to use a placebo in clinical trials for contraceptives, as this would lead to many unintentional pregnancies.

In these studies, common Yasmin (or Yasmin plus folate) side effects included but were not limited to:

  • Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) -- in up to 12.4 percent of women
  • Headache or migraine -- up to 10.3 percent
  • Breast pain, tenderness, or discomfort -- up to 8.1 percent
  • Nausea and/or vomiting -- up to 4.4 percent
  • Abdominal (stomach) pain, discomfort, or tenderness -- up to 2.2 percent.
