Generic Safyral

Safyral is currently available in brand-name form only. The medication is protected by a patent that is not set to expire until at least 2015. Generic versions of Safyral will likely be produced once this patent expires. Until then, you can talk to your healthcare provider about taking another birth control pill (such as Yasmin) plus folate supplementation as an alternative.

Can I Buy Generic Safyral?

Safyral™ (drospirenone/ethinyl estradiol/levomefolate calcium) is a prescription contraceptive product. It is one of the many oral contraceptives (birth control pills) available. In addition to containing hormones, Safyral provides folate, a B vitamin that helps prevent birth defects.

Safyral is made by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals. At this time, there are no generic versions of Safyral.

When Will Generic Safyral Be Available?

The first patent for Safyral currently expires in July 2015. However, it is likely that other, later-expiring patents will protect Safyral from generic protection well beyond 2015.

The actual date that a generic version could become available depends on several factors. For instance, other circumstances could come up to extend or shorten the exclusivity period. This could include such things as lawsuits or other patents for specific Safyral uses. Once the patent expires, there may be several companies that manufacture a generic Safyral drug.

What About Yasmin, Ocella, or Zarah?

Yasmin® is similar to Safyral, except it does not contain folate. It contains exactly the same hormones in exactly the same strengths. In fact, Safyral was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) largely based on the studies done with Yasmin. Generic versions of Yasmin are available, sold under the names Ocella™ and Zarah™.

Yasmin, Ocella, and Zarah are not interchangeable with Safyral. However, they may be acceptable alternatives to Safyral, especially if you are willing to take folate supplementation separately. This can be accomplished by taking a multivitamin and can be inexpensive. Check with your healthcare provider if you are interested in this possibly less expensive alternative.
