Common Reactions to Rilpivirine

Common Side Effects

Clinical studies have evaluated the safety of using rilpivirine in combination with other HIV medications, as rilpivirine is not meant to be used alone. In fact, the available information on potential side effects involves studies that used rilpivirine plus a "background regimen" of other HIV drugs. Therefore, it is difficult to know if these reactions are due to rilpivirine or the other HIV medications.

Based on these studies, the most common side effects of rilpivirine (when taken along with a "background regimen" of other HIV medications) included:

  • Depression or other mood problems -- in up to 8 percent of people
  • Headaches -- up to 3 percent
  • Rash -- up to 3 percent
  • Insomnia -- up to 3 percent.

Other common side effects, each occurring in 1 percent of people, included:

  • Nausea
  • Abdominal (stomach) pain
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Abnormal dreams.

Final Thoughts

You may experience some or none of the rilpivirine side effects listed in this article. Unfortunately, there is no way for your healthcare provider to know beforehand if you will have problems with a medicine that you have never tried.

Therefore, make sure to let your healthcare provider know if you develop any side effects while taking this medication or if something "just does not seem right." While it may not be related to the medication, your healthcare provider will be able to diagnose and treat the problem.
