The most common side effects of raltegravir include nausea, headaches, and diarrhea. There are also several potentially serious side effects that should be reported to a healthcare provider right away, such any signs of an allergic reaction, kidney damage, or anemia. In most cases, however, raltegravir side effects are minor and easily treated by you or your healthcare provider.
Side Effects of Raltegravir: An Introduction
As with any medicine, side effects are possible with
raltegravir (
Isentress™). However, not everyone who takes the drug will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider.

Side Effects of Raltegravir to Report
Some side effects with raltegravir, while occurring infrequently, are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
- Anemia
- Kidney damage
- High blood sugar (hyperglycemia)
- Changes in the distribution of fat on your body (such as a "buffalo hump")
- Signs of an allergic reaction, such as a rash, hives, itching, swelling of the mouth or throat, wheezing, or difficulty breathing.
