Quartette and Pregnancy

Women who are pregnant should not use Quartette (levonorgestrel/ethinyl estradiol). However, if you accidentally take this birth control pill before realizing you are pregnant, serious problems are not likely to occur. If you do become pregnant, stop using the oral contraceptive immediately and talk to your healthcare provider.

Can Pregnant Women Take Quartette?

Quartette™ (levonorgestrel/ethinyl estradiol) is a prescription birth control pill, also known as an oral contraceptive. As with all oral contraceptives, Quartette should not be intentionally used during pregnancy.

What Is Pregnancy Category X?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) uses a category system to classify the possible risks to a fetus when a specific medicine is taken during pregnancy. Quartette is classified as a pregnancy Category X medicine.

Pregnancy Category X is given to medications that should not be used during pregnancy, usually due to serious problems, such as birth defects or miscarriages.

Even though Quartette is a pregnancy Category X medication, it will probably not cause any problems if accidentally used during early pregnancy. Many studies have shown no increased risk of birth defects when birth control pills were accidentally taken in early pregnancy.

Since you will have your period only four times a year while taking Quartette, make sure you are not pregnant any time you miss your period or if you have any other reason to suspect you may be pregnant. Do not wait until you have missed two periods, which is often recommended with traditional birth control pills, as this will be several months away.

Final Thoughts

If you accidentally used Quartette for a while before realizing you were pregnant, this probably will not cause any problems, although you should discuss this with your healthcare provider. If you are pregnant, you should stop using Quartette right away. If you think you may be pregnant, you should contact your healthcare provider for further instructions.
