Drugs That React With Oral Contraceptives

Oral Contraceptive Drug Interactions Explained

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when oral contraceptives are combined with any of the drugs listed above.

Aminoglutethimide (Cytadren)
Aminoglutethimide may make oral contraceptives less effective, possibly increasing your risk of pregnancy. Talk with your healthcare provider before using these medications together. You may need to use a backup method of contraception, such as condoms.

Antibiotics
There have been reports of accidental pregnancy occurring in women taking oral contraceptives and certain antibiotics. However, it is still uncertain how significant this interaction may be. Some antibiotics may be more likely to cause problems than others. Ask your healthcare provider if you need a backup method of contraception any time you take an antibiotic.

Aprepitant (Emend)
Aprepitant may make oral contraceptives less effective, perhaps increasing your chance of pregnancy. Talk with your healthcare provider before using these medications together. You may need to use a backup method of contraception.

Barbiturates
Barbiturates may cause your body to metabolize the hormones in oral contraceptives too quickly, perhaps increasing your risk of pregnancy. Ask your healthcare provider if you should use a different method of contraception while taking a barbiturate.

Many Seizure Medications
Some seizure medications may cause your body to metabolize the hormones in oral contraceptives too quickly, possibly increasing your risk of pregnancy. Ask your healthcare provider if you should use a different method of contraception while taking a seizure medication. If you take seizure medications, it may be particularly important for you to avoid pregnancy, since some seizure medications can cause birth defects.
