Ogestrel Drug Interactions

Before taking certain medications, talk to your healthcare provider about how these medications may interfere with Ogestrel. Drug interactions may occur if Ogestrel is taken with antibiotics, certain seizure medications, and some barbiturates, among other things. Some of these interactions can decrease the effectiveness of Ogestrel, possibly increasing the risk of pregnancy or increasing your risk of side effects.

Ogestrel^® (norgestrel/ethinyl estradiol) can potentially interact with numerous other medicines. While many Ogestrel drug interactions are minor and are unlikely to cause serious problems, some interactions can be severe enough to lead to unintentional pregnancy. In many situations, a backup method of birth control, such as condoms, may be advised. Some of the medicines that can lead to significant Ogestrel drug interactions include:

Aminoglutethimide (Cytadren^®)
Antibiotics
Aprepitant (Emend^®)
Barbiturates, such as:

Amobarbital (Amytal^®)
Butalbital (Fioricet^®, Fiorinal^®)
Pentobarbital (Nembutal^®)
Phenobarbital (Luminal^®)
Primidone (Mysoline^®)
Secobarbital (Seconal^®)

Cyclosporine (Gengraf^®, Neoral^®, Sandimmune^®)
Modafinil (Provigil^®)
Protease inhibitors, such as:

Selegiline (Eldepryl^®, Emsam^®, Zelapar^®)
Some seizure medications, such as:

Carbamazepine (Carbatrol^®, Epitol^®, Equetro™, Tegretol^®)
Felbamate (Felbatol^®)
