Nevirapine Dosing

The recommended nevirapine dosage for adults is 200 mg once daily for the first 14 days, then 200 mg twice daily thereafter. Nevirapine dosing for children is determined by the child's age and weight. For example, children age eight and older may start with 4 mg per kg of body weight once daily for 14 days, followed by 4 mg per kg twice daily thereafter.

Nevirapine Dosage: An Introduction

The dose of nevirapine (Viramune®) that your healthcare provider recommends will vary depending on a number of factors, including:

  • Other medical conditions you may have
  • Other medications you may be currently taking
  • Your age
  • Your weight (for children).

As always, do not adjust your nevirapine dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.

Nevirapine Dosing for Adults

The recommended nevirapine dose for treating adults with HIV or AIDS is 200 mg once daily for the first 14 days, then 200 mg twice daily thereafter. Nevirapine should be used in combination with other HIV medications, as part of an HIV "cocktail" (this is known as highly active antiretroviral therapy, or HAART).

If you are undergoing dialysis, you will need an extra nevirapine dose after each dialysis session.

Nevirapine Dosing for Children

For children age two months to up to eight years old, the recommended dose of nevirapine is 4 mg per kg of weight (about 1.8 mg per pound) once daily for the first 14 days, followed by 7 mg per kg (about 3.2 mg per pound) twice daily thereafter. For children eight years old and older, the recommended dose is nevirapine 4 mg per kg (about 1.8 mg per pound) once daily for the first 14 days, followed by 4 mg per kg (about 1.8 mg per pound) twice daily thereafter.
