Natazia Side Effects
While most women have no problems with Natazia, side effects are possible. Commonly reported side effects of this birth control pill include nausea, breast pain, and headaches. These problems are typically minor and, in most cases, easily treated. However, you should contact your healthcare provider immediately if you develop more serious side effects, such as chest pain or difficulty breathing.
As with any medicine, Natazia® (dienogest/estradiol valerate) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the contraceptive will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If reactions do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Natazia. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)
Common Side Effects of Natazia
Natazia has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials. In the studies for most medications, the side effects that occur in a group of people taking the drug are documented and then compared to the side effects that occur in another group of people not taking the medicine (who take a placebo with no active ingredient).
As a result, it is possible to see what side effects occur, how often they appear, and how they compare to the group not taking the medicine. However, it is not possible to use a placebo in clinical trials for contraceptives, as this would lead to many unintentional pregnancies.
It is important to understand that the information about potential side effects of Natazia does not contain comparative placebo information. Therefore, some of the listed side effects might not really be side effects at all. For instance, although acne and weight gain are listed as potential side effects, it is possible that these common occurrences were completely unrelated to this birth control pill.
Common side effects of Natazia may include:
- Headaches -- in up to 12.7 percent of women
- Breast pain, discomfort, or tenderness -- up to 7 percent
- Irregular or abnormal menstrual periods and/or bleeding between periods -- up to 6.9 percent
- Nausea or vomiting -- up to 6 percent
- Acne -- up to 3.9 percent
- Mood changes, such as depression, low mood, or crying -- up to 3 percent
- Weight gain -- up to 2.9 percent (see Natazia and Weight Gain).
