Natazia and Pregnancy

Due to the risk of birth defects and other problems, Natazia (dienogest/estradiol valerate) should not intentionally be taken during pregnancy. Natazia is a pregnancy Category X medication; however, it is unlikely to cause problems if you accidentally take it during the early part of your pregnancy. However, you should immediately stop taking the birth control pill once you realize you are pregnant.

Can Pregnant Women Take Natazia?

Natazia® (dienogest/estradiol valerate) is a prescription birth control pill. As with all oral contraceptives, you should not take Natazia intentionally during pregnancy. While your risk of pregnancy is quite small if you take this birth control pill as directed, the risk of pregnancy greatly increases if you do not follow your instructions carefully.

What Is Pregnancy Category X?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) uses a pregnancy category system to classify the possible risks to a fetus when a specific medicine is taken during pregnancy. Pregnancy Category X is given to medications that should not be used during pregnancy, usually due to serious problems such as birth defects or miscarriages. It is also given to medications for which the risks clearly and significantly outweigh the benefits.
Even though it is a pregnancy Category X medication, Natazia is probably unlikely to cause significant problems if accidentally used during early pregnancy. Many studies have shown no increased risk of birth defects when birth control pills were accidentally taken in early pregnancy.
However, because there are absolutely no benefits for taking Natazia during pregnancy, you should not take it if you know you are pregnant. Natazia will not prevent (or cause) a miscarriage. Birth control pills are assigned pregnancy Category X ratings because the risks, however small, always outweigh the benefits -- there are no benefits for taking birth control pills during pregnancy.
