Natazia and Breastfeeding

If you are breastfeeding while taking Natazia, you should know that the contraceptive can decrease the production and quality of breast milk. Studies have shown that the hormones in birth control pills do pass through breast milk in low amounts. Although these amounts are not likely to cause any serious problems, talk to your healthcare provider before using this birth control pill while nursing.

Can Breastfeeding Women Take Natazia?

Natazia® (dienogest/estradiol valerate) is a prescription birth control pill. In addition to preventing pregnancy, Natazia is approved to treat heavy monthly periods not caused by a condition of the uterus (the womb). As with most birth control pills, Natazia is not recommended for women who are breastfeeding.

Information on Natazia and Breastfeeding

Natazia is classified as a combined hormonal contraceptive. This type of contraceptive contains both a progestin and an estrogen, and it is the most commonly used birth control pill. The vast majority of birth control pills on the market today are combined hormonal contraceptives.

It's important to note that combined contraceptives may decrease the production and quality of breast milk. For this reason, progestin-only oral contraceptives (also known as "mini-pills") are almost always recommended instead of combined contraceptives in breastfeeding women. However, progestin-only contraceptive pills are usually less effective than combined contraceptives. As soon as you stop breastfeeding, it may be a good idea to ask your healthcare provider about switching to a combined contraceptive product (such as Natazia).

Studies have shown that the hormones in birth control pills do pass through breast milk in low amounts. These tiny amounts are probably too low to cause significant problems in nursing infants. However, there have been cases of problems (such as breast enlargement and jaundice) in babies whose mothers took other combined hormonal contraceptives while breastfeeding.
