Minastrin 24 Fe Uses

How Does It Work?

Minastrin 24 Fe is a combined oral contraceptive, which means it contains two different types of hormones: an estrogen (ethinyl estradiol) and a progestin (norethindrone). These hormones prevent pregnancy primarily by stopping ovulation (the maturation and release of eggs from the ovaries).

However, this contraceptive also works in two other, minor ways. Minastrin 24 Fe changes the cervical mucus (the fluid of the cervix, which is the lower, narrow part of the uterus that is connected to the vagina), making it more difficult for sperm to enter the uterus. It also alters the lining of the uterus (the endometrium), making it less receptive to an embryo.

Most birth control pills contain 21 active tablets with the hormones, followed by 7 inactive tablets with no active ingredients. However, as the name suggests, there are 24 active tablets in Minastrin 24 Fe, 3 more than usual, and only 4 inactive tablets. Having fewer hormone-free days usually results in lighter, shorter periods. The last four tablets, which contain no hormones, contain iron. The chemical symbol for iron is Fe.

Is It Safe for Children and Teens to Use Minastrin 24 Fe?

Minastrin 24 Fe is approved for use in women of reproductive age. This means that it is not approved for use in girls who have not yet had their first menstrual period.
