Generic Minastrin 24 Fe
At this time, Minastrin 24 Fe tablets are available in brand-name form only. After the first patent for the product expires in July 2014, companies may be allowed to manufacture a generic Minastrin 24 Fe product. This date may change if lawsuits or patents for other uses are filed.
Minastrin™ 24 Fe (norethindrone/ethinyl estradiol) is a prescription contraceptive product. It is one of the many oral contraceptives (birth control pills) available. Compared to older birth control pills, Minastrin 24 Fe contains a relatively low dose of hormones. It also has fewer hormone-free days per cycle (only four instead of the usual seven), which usually causes lighter, shorter menstrual periods.
Minastrin 24 Fe is made by Warner Chilcott Company, Inc. It is currently under the protection of patents that prevent any generic Minastrin 24 Fe from being manufactured in the United States.
The first patent for Minastrin 24 Fe is set to expire in July 2014. Other circumstances could come up to extend the exclusivity period of Minastrin 24 Fe beyond 2014. This could include such things as lawsuits or other patents for new Minastrin 24 Fe uses. Once the medication goes off-patent, there may be several companies that will begin manufacturing generic Minastrin 24 Fe products.
Each insurance company is different. There has been a long history of insurance companies not covering contraceptive products, although this is beginning to change. Although insurance companies are required by the Affordable Care Act to cover birth control pills, they are not required to cover all brands of birth control pills. Because Minastrin 24 Fe is not available in a generic form, you may have to pay a higher copayment, although coverage and copayments vary widely.
