Generic MetroGel-Vaginal

All of the patents for MetroGel-Vaginal (metronidazole vaginal gel) have expired, and this medication is available in generic form. Generic MetroGel-Vaginal is sold in the same strength as the brand-name product, but is manufactured by various companies. The FDA has determined that these generic versions are as good as the brand-name drug.

Can I Buy Generic MetroGel-Vaginal?

MetroGel-Vaginal® (metronidazole vaginal gel) is a prescription medication used for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis. It comes in the form of a gel that is applied once or twice a day. This product should not be confused with regular Metrogel®, a skin gel used to treat rosacea.

Brand-name MetroGel-Vaginal is made by DPT Laboratories, Inc., for Graceway Pharmaceuticals, LLC. However, the patents for this medication have expired, and it is available in generic form.

Available Strengths

Just like brand-name MetroGel-Vaginal, generic metronidazole vaginal gel is available in one strength (0.75%) and in one size (70-gram tube). It is made by various manufacturers, such as Tolmar, Inc., (for Sandoz) and Prasco Laboratories.

Is Generic Metronidazole Vaginal Gel as Good as MetroGel-Vaginal?

All generic medications must undergo certain tests to compare them to brand-name medications. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then looks at these tests to decide if the generics are equivalent to the brand-name medications and assigns a rating to each one. An "AB" rating means that the FDA has determined that a generic medication is equivalent to a brand-name medication.

All of the generic metronidazole vaginal gel versions currently available have an "AB" rating, meaning they should be equivalent to MetroGel-Vaginal. However, generic medications are allowed to have different inactive ingredients than the brand-name medication. This might include fillers, dyes, or other ingredients that may cause problems for people with allergies or sensitivities.

For example, Vandazole® metronidazole vaginal gel (a different brand-name product) is not considered equivalent to MetroGel-Vaginal, due to slight differences in product absorption and effectiveness.
