What Is Medroxyprogesterone?

Medroxyprogesterone (Provera®, Depo-Provera®, depo-subQ Provera 104®) is a prescription hormone medication used for several different reasons.

What is medroxyprogesterone used for, specifically? The answer depends on which form of the medication is being used. For example, the oral tablet version of this drug has been approved for the following uses:

  • Restoring normal menstrual periods in women who used to have regular periods but have not had them for several months (amenorrhea)

  • Treating abnormal vaginal bleeding due to an imbalance in hormones

  • Reducing the risk for cancer of the uterus by preventing endometrial hyperplasia (a condition in which the lining of the uterus grows too thick) in postmenopausal women who are taking estrogen.

When given as an injection, medroxyprogesterone can be used as a long-term contraceptive or as a way to relieve symptoms of advanced kidney cancer, among other things.

Side effects may include breast tenderness, headache, and weight gain. However, most people are able to use this product without any problems.
