Oral Medroxyprogesterone Acetate

Available in the form of a tablet, oral medroxyprogesterone acetate (Provera®) is approved for the following uses:

  • Restoring normal menstrual periods in women who used to have regular periods but have not had them for several months (amenorrhea)

  • Treating abnormal vaginal bleeding due to an imbalance in hormones

  • Reducing the risk for cancer of the uterus by preventing endometrial hyperplasia (a condition in which the lining of the uterus grows too thick) in postmenopausal women who are taking estrogen.
  •
Medroxyprogesterone tablets can be taken with or without food, although you may want to take them with food if they bother your stomach. The tablets come in three strengths; your healthcare provider will determine the correct dosage for you based on how well you tolerate the tablets and the condition being treated, among other factors.

An injectable form of medroxyprogesterone is also available. It is used for conditions other than the ones discussed in this article.
