Medroxyprogesterone Off-Label

Medroxyprogesterone (Provera®, Depo-Provera®, depo-subQ Provera 104®) is a prescription progestin drug that is licensed for many uses. For example, it is approved for the treatment of irregular vaginal bleeding and amenorrhea. It is also approved as a long-term form of birth control, among other uses.

However, on occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend medroxyprogesterone for something other than the conditions it is approved to treat. This is known as an "off-label" use. Some forms of medroxyprogesterone are used off-label for the following reasons:

  • Treating endometriosis
  • Managing symptoms of certain types of advanced cancer
  • Reducing sexual aggression in men with dementia.
  •
Medroxyprogesterone should not be used off-label to promote youthfulness.
