Over 30 types of the human papillomavirus (HPV) are spread through sexual contact, and several of these specifically cause venereal warts. The most common cause is HPV-6 or HPV-11. These types of HPV account for over 90 percent of all venereal warts cases. Other types of HPV that can cause venereal warts include HPV-30, HPV-40 through 45, HPV-51, and HPV-54.
