STD Home > Efavirenz for HIV/AIDS

Although it is not a cure for HIV or AIDS, efavirenz (Sustiva®) can help prevent HIV from spreading to uninfected cells in the body. Cells that have already been infected with the virus will not be changed.

Efavirenz comes in the form of a tablet or a capsule, and is designed to be taken with other HIV medications as part of an HIV "cocktail." It is approved for use in adults and children as young as three years old.
