STD Home > Drug Interactions With Pirmella

Some seizure medications, barbiturates, certain antibiotics, and other products may cause drug interactions with Pirmella. Many of these reactions can reduce the effectiveness of Pirmella, possibly increasing the chance of unintentional pregnancy. To help reduce your risk, tell your healthcare provider about all other products you are taking, including nonprescription medications.

An Overview of Pirmella Interactions

Pirmella™ (norethindrone and ethinyl estradiol) can potentially interact with several other medicines. Because some of these interactions can lead to accidental pregnancy, a backup method of birth control may be recommended in some situations.

Because many medications react with Pirmella, you should make sure that all of your healthcare providers know you are taking it. Any time you start a new medication, check with your healthcare provider about possible reactions with Pirmella. Some of the medicines that may lead to interactions include:

  • Aminoglutethimide (Cytadren®)
  • Antibiotics
  • Aprepitant (Emend®)
  • Barbiturate medications, such as:
    • Amobarbital (Amytal®)
    • Butalbital (Fioricet®, Fiorinal®)
    • Pentobarbital (Nembutal®)
    • Phenobarbital (Luminal®)
    • Primidone (Mysoline®)
    • Secobarbital (Seconal®)
