Natazia is a "four-phasic" birth control pill, which means that each package contains varying amounts of estrogen and progestin at four different phases in the menstrual cycle. It comes in tablet form and is taken at the same time every day. Although most women tolerate it well, side effects can occur, such as acne, nausea, and breakthrough bleeding.
Natazia is the first birth control pill to use estradiol valerate (instead of ethinyl estradiol) for the estrogen and is the first four-phasic birth control pill. "Four-phasic" means that each pack of Natazia contains varying doses of the hormones at four different phases in the cycle.

Who Makes This Medication?
Natazia is manufactured by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
How Does It Work?
Natazia is a combined oral contraceptive, a birth control pill that contains both an estrogen (estradiol valerate) and a progestin (dienogest). Most importantly, Natazia prevents pregnancy by stopping ovulation (the maturation and release of eggs from the ovaries).
However, it also works to prevent pregnancy in two other, minor ways. Natazia alters the cervical mucus (the fluid of the cervix, which is the lower, narrow part of the uterus that is connected to the vagina), making it more difficult for sperm to enter the uterus. Lastly, it alters the lining of the uterus (called the endometrium), making it less receptive to an embryo.
Natazia reduces heavy menstrual bleeding by thinning the lining of the uterus.
