STD Home > Minastrin 24 Fe Side Effects

Nausea, headaches, and mood swings are some of the common side effects of Minastrin 24 Fe. Most women tolerate this drug well; if reactions do occur, they tend to be minor and easy to treat. However, potentially dangerous problems are also possible. If you develop a migraine, depression, or other serious reactions, contact your healthcare provider right away.

An Introduction to Minastrin 24 Fe Side Effects

Just like any medicine, Minastrin™ 24 Fe (norethindrone/ethinyl estradiol) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the contraceptive will experience problems. In fact, most women tolerate it quite well. If reactions do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider.

Because Minastrin 24 Fe contains a low dose of hormones compared to older birth control pills, in theory, side effects may be less common with it.

(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Minastrin 24 Fe. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)

Common Side Effects of Minastrin 24 Fe

In clinical studies for most medications, one group of people is given the actual medication, while another group is given a placebo (a "sugar pill" with no active ingredients). The side effects in both groups are carefully documented and compared. As a result, it is possible to see what side effects occur, how often they appear, and how they compare to the group not taking the medicine. However, it is not possible to use a placebo in clinical trials for contraceptives, as this would lead to many unintentional pregnancies.

It is difficult to obtain much information about potential side effects from studies that do not use a placebo. Therefore, although the following side effects were commonly reported in clinical studies of Minastrin 24 Fe, it is difficult to know if they are "true" side effects. These common reactions included:

  • Headaches -- in up to 6.3 percent of women
  • Vaginal yeast infections -- up to 6.1 percent
  • Nausea -- up to 4.6 percent
  • Menstrual cramps -- up to 4.4 percent
  • Breast tenderness -- up to 3.4 percent
  • Bacterial vaginitis infection -- up to 3.1 percent
  • Abnormal Pap smear results -- up to 3.7 percent
  • Acne -- up to 2.7 percent
  • Mood swings -- up to 2.2 percent
  • Weight gain (see Minastrin 24 Fe and Weight Gain) -- up to 2 percent.
