STD Home > Side Effects of Fosamprenavir
Some potentially serious side effects of fosamprenavir that require immediate medical attention include unusual or unexplained bleeding, changes in body fat distribution, and high blood sugar. When side effects do occur, however, they are typically minor and either don't require treatment or can be treated easily. Other more common fosamprenavir side effects include diarrhea, fatigue, nausea, and high triglycerides.
As with any medicine, side effects are possible with fosamprenavir calcium (Lexiva®); however, not everyone who takes the drug will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with fosamprenavir. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list of fosamprenavir side effects with you.)
Clinical studies have not evaluated fosamprenavir alone for the treatment of HIV, since it is meant to be used along with other HIV medications. In fact, the available information on side effects involves studies that used fosamprenavir plus two or three other HIV medications. Therefore, it is difficult to determine whether these side effects are due to fosamprenavir or the other HIV medications.
Some side effects with fosamprenavir, while occurring infrequently, are potentially serious and should be reported to your healthcare provider right away. These include but are not limited to:
- Signs of liver damage, such as:
- Fatigue or a general ill feeling (malaise)
- Loss of appetite
- Yellow eyes or skin (jaundice)
- Tenderness near the liver (the upper-right abdomen)
- Pale stools
- High blood sugar (hyperglycemia)
- Unusual or unexplained bleeding
- Kidney stones
- Changes in the distribution of fat on your body (such as a "buffalo hump")
- Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
- Swelling of the mouth or throat
- Difficulty breathing.
