STD Home > Amprenavir Dosing

The amprenavir dosage for treating adults with HIV or AIDS is 1200 mg twice daily. Dosing recommendations for children are primarily based on weight. Amprenavir solution should only be taken by those who cannot swallow the capsules. Other factors that may affect your amprenavir dosage include other medical conditions you may have and other medications you are taking.

Amprenavir Dosing: An Introduction

The dose of amprenavir (Agenerase®) that your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:
  • Your age
  • Your weight (for children)
  • Other medical conditions you may have
  • Other medications you may be currently taking.
As always, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.
Amprenavir is no longer available in the United States. The manufacturer stopped making it due to low demand, since it has been largely replaced by fosamprenavir (Lexiva®), a similar medication.

Amprenavir Dosing for Adults

The recommended dose of amprenavir for treating adults with HIV or AIDS is amprenavir 1200 mg twice daily. Unfortunately, amprenavir capsules only come in one strength (50 mg), which means that the recommended dose for adults is 24 capsules twice daily. If amprenavir is combined with Norvir® (ritonavir), then either of the following dosing regimens is recommended:
  • Amprenavir 1200 mg (24 capsules) once daily, plus Norvir 200 mg once daily
  • Amprenavir 600 mg (12 capsules), plus Norvir 100 mg twice daily.
Adults should not take amprenavir solution. It contains propylene glycol, which can be dangerous in large amounts, and anyone who is able to take the capsules should not take the solution. Pregnant women and people with liver or kidney failure should never take amprenavir solution.
