STD Home > Amethia Lo Dosage

The standard dosage for women who are taking Amethia Lo is one pill taken once a day. This prescription contraceptive comes in a pack that contains 91 pills, which allows for less frequent menstrual periods. Make sure to take your dose consistently at the same time every day, as missing doses increases your risk of pregnancy.

An Introduction to Your Dose of Amethia Lo

There is only one standard recommended dose for Amethia™ Lo (levonorgestrel/ethinyl estradiol). As always, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

Amethia Lo Dosing Guidelines

Amethia Lo comes in one strength, containing 0.1 mg of levonorgestrel and 0.02 mg of ethinyl estradiol per active tablet (the first 84 white tablets). The last seven (blue) tablets contain 0.01 mg of ethinyl estradiol per tablet, but no levonorgestrel. By taking these seven tablets, your body gets a break from the levonorgestrel, allowing you to have a period. You may experience breakthrough bleeding or spotting between periods. This is not an actual period; keep taking Amethia Lo as usual.
Starting at the beginning of the pack, take one tablet at the same time each day. When you take Amethia Lo for the first time, start the pack on the first Sunday after your period starts. If your period happens to start on a Sunday, start the pack on the first day of your period. For the first seven days when you begin taking Amethia Lo, a backup method of contraception (such as condoms) is necessary.

What Should I Do If I Miss a Pill?

It is important that you take Amethia Lo every day and at the same time every day, even if you do not have sex very often. Missing pills increases the risk of pregnancy. What you should do if you miss pills depends on how many pills you have missed and when in the cycle they were missed.
Some general instructions for missed Amethia Lo dosages include the following:
  • If you miss one of the white pills (one of the first 84 tablets), take the missed pill as soon as you remember and take the next pill at your regular time, even if this means taking two pills at once. You do not need to use a backup method of contraception, as you will be adequately protected against pregnancy.
  • If you miss two white pills in a row, take two pills on the day you remember and two pills the next day. This should get you back on your regular schedule. You must use a backup method of contraception, such as condoms, if you have sex in the seven days after you restart the pills.
  • If you miss three or more white pills in a row, skip the missed pills and continue with your usual schedule. It is probably best to pop the missed pills out of the pack and dispose of them to avoid any confusion. You may become pregnant if you have sex during the days you missed pills or within seven days of restarting Amethia Lo.
Make sure to use a backup method of contraception for seven days after you restart the pills. If you do not get your period as usual, or if you have other reasons to suspect that you may be pregnant, contact your healthcare provider.
  • If you miss any of the blue pills (the last seven pills), throw away any of the pills you have missed and continue as usual. You do not need to use a backup method of contraception as long as you start your next pack on schedule.
