Lo Minastrin Fe Side Effects

Some of the possible side effects of Lo Minastrin Fe include nausea, headaches, and breast tenderness. Most women tend to tolerate this contraceptive well. If reactions do occur, they are often minor and easy to treat. However, potentially dangerous problems are also possible. If you develop sharp chest pain, difficulty breathing, or other serious reactions, contact your healthcare provider right away.

An Introduction to Lo Minastrin Fe Side Effects

Just like any medicine, Lo Minastrin™ Fe (norethindrone/ethinyl estradiol) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the contraceptive will experience problems. In fact, most women tolerate it quite well. If reactions do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

Because Lo Minastrin Fe contains a low dose of hormones compared to older birth control pills, in theory, side effects may be less common with this product.

(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Lo Minastrin Fe. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)

Common Side Effects of Lo Minastrin Fe

In clinical studies for most medications, one group of people is given the actual medication, while another group is given a placebo (a "sugar pill" with no active ingredients). The side effects in both groups are carefully documented and compared. As a result, it is possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the group not taking the medicine. However, it is not possible to use a placebo in clinical trials for contraceptives, as this would lead to many unintentional pregnancies.

It is difficult to obtain much information about side effects from studies that do not use a placebo. Therefore, although the following reactions were commonly reported in clinical studies of Lo Minastrin Fe, it is difficult to know if they are "true" side effects or not.

Some of these common reactions, occurring in 3 percent to 7 percent of women, included:

  • Nausea and/or vomiting -- in up to 7 percent of women
  • Headache -- up to 7 percent
  • Bleeding irregularities, such as spotting or heavy periods -- up to 5 percent
  • Painful menstrual cramps -- up to 4 percent
  • Weight fluctuation -- up to 4 percent (see Lo Minastrin Fe and Weight Gain)
  • Breast tenderness -- up to 4 percent
  • Acne -- up to 3 percent
  • Abdominal (stomach) pain -- up to 3 percent.
