Fosamprenavir Dosing for Children
Your child's healthcare provider will calculate the
fosamprenavir dose based on your child's age and weight. Also, depending on your child's age and whether other protease inhibitors have been tried in the past, your healthcare provider may recommend combining fosamprenavir with
Norvir, another
HIV medication used to increase the level of fosamprenavir in the blood to make it more effective.
For children ages 2 to 18, fosamprenavir should be taken twice daily, not once a day.
General Information on Dosing With Fosamprenavir
Considerations for people taking fosamprenavir include the following:
- The medication comes in tablet and oral suspension (liquid) form. It is usually taken by mouth once or twice a day.
- You can take fosamprenavir tablets with or without food. However, adults should take fosamprenavir suspension without food, while children should take fosamprenavir suspension with food.
- If you vomit within 30 minutes of taking fosamprenavir, you should take another dose, as you probably vomited up the medicine.
- Be sure to shake fosamprenavir suspension well before each dose.
- Try to take fosamprenavir at the same time(s) every day to maintain an even level in your blood.
- For the medication to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed. It is very important that you closely follow your healthcare provider's instructions about taking fosamprenavir. Missing doses can increase the chance of the virus developing resistance to the medication, thereby making it less effective.
- If you are unsure about anything related to fosamprenavir dosing, please talk to your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. Do not stop taking the drug without first discussing it with your healthcare provider.
