Estrostep Fe Drug Interactions

If you are taking other medications with Estrostep Fe, drug interactions may occur. Medicines that can negatively interact with Estrostep Fe include barbiturates, antibiotics, and many seizure medications. Some of these interactions can make Estrostep Fe less effective, increasing your risk of pregnancy. To avoid these and other Estrostep Fe drug interactions, tell your healthcare provider about all other medications you are taking.

 

An Introduction to Estrostep Fe Drug Interactions

Estrostep® Fe (norethindrone/ethinyl estradiol) can potentially interact with several other medicines. Many of these interactions are severe enough to lead to unintentional pregnancy. In such situations, a backup method of birth control, such as condoms, may be required. Some of the medicines that may lead to Estrostep Fe drug interactions include:
 
  • Aminoglutethimide (Cytadren®)
  • Antibiotics
  • Aprepitant (Emend®)
  • Barbiturates, such as:
 
    • Amobarbital (Amytal®)
    • Butalbital (Fioricet®, Fiorinal®)
    • Pentobarbital (Nembutal®)
    • Phenobarbital (Luminal®)
    • Secobarbital (Seconal®)
 
  • Cyclosporine (Gengraf®, Neoral®, Sandimmune®)
  • Many seizure medications, such as:
 
 
 
 
If you are not sure how to handle any particular Estrostep Fe drug interaction, it is wise to use a backup method of contraception until you can check with your healthcare provider.
