Enfuvirtide Dosing: An Introduction

The dose of enfuvirtide (Fuzeon®) that your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:
  • Your age
  • Your weight (for children)
  • Other medical conditions you may have
  • Other medications you may be currently taking.
As always, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.

Enfuvirtide Dosing for Adults

The recommended dose of enfuvirtide for treating adults with HIV or AIDS is enfuvirtide 90 mg (1 mL) injected twice daily just under the skin of the upper arm, abdomen, or the top of the thighs.

Enfuvirtide Dosing for Children

Your child's healthcare provider will calculate the enfuvirtide dosage based on your child's weight. Make sure your healthcare provider adjusts your child's dose as he or she grows.

General Information on Dosing With Enfuvirtide

Considerations for people taking enfuvirtide include the following:
  • The medication comes in the form of an injection. It is injected just under the skin (subcutaneously) of the upper arm, abdomen, or the front of the thigh twice daily.
  • Try to rotate the injection sites. Avoid any area of the skin that is irritated, broken, scarred, tattooed, or has any other problem or abnormality. Your healthcare provider can help you choose the best injection sites (those that do not have any large nerves or blood vessels).
  • Enfuvirtide comes as a dry powder that must be mixed with Sterile Water for Injection (which comes with it) before each dose. Be sure you know exactly how to prepare your enfuvirtide injection.
  • Try to take enfuvirtide at the same times every day to maintain an even level in your blood.
  • For the medication to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed. It is very important that you closely follow your healthcare provider's instructions on taking enfuvirtide. Missing doses can increase the chance of the virus developing a resistance to the drug, thereby making it less effective.
  • If you are unsure about anything related to enfuvirtide dosing, please talk to your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. Do not stop taking the drug without first discussing it with your healthcare provider.
