Emtricitabine Dosing for People With Kidney Disease

The kidneys help to remove emtricitabine from the body. Therefore, if you have kidney disease, you will probably need a lower emtricitabine dosage. Your healthcare provider will calculate your emtricitabine dose based on how well your kidneys are functioning.
 

General Emtricitabine Dosing Information

Some considerations for people taking emtricitabine include the following:
 
  • Emtricitabine comes in the form of a capsule and an oral solution (liquid). It is usually taken by mouth once daily.
     
  • It does not matter if you take emtricitabine with or without food. If the medicine bothers your stomach, try taking it with food.
     
  • Try to take emtricitabine at the same time every day to maintain an even level of the medication in your blood.
     
  • For the medication to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed. It is very important that you closely follow your healthcare provider's instructions for taking emtricitabine. Missing doses can increase the chance of the virus developing a resistance to emtricitabine (making it less effective).
     
  • If you are unsure about anything related to your emtricitabine dosage, please talk to your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.
