Emtricitabine/Rilpivirine/Tenofovir Side Effects

Although reactions to emtricitabine/rilpivirine/tenofovir tend to be minor, serious complications may occur. Contact your healthcare provider right away if you develop serious side effects while taking emtricitabine/rilpivirine/tenofovir, such as signs of depression, kidney problems, or muscle pain. Common reactions to this drug include headaches, insomnia, and increased cholesterol levels.

An Introduction to Side Effects of Emtricitabine/Rilpivirine/Tenofovir

Just like any medicine, emtricitabine/rilpivirine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (Complera™) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

Emtricitabine/Rilpivirine/Tenofovir Side Effects to Report

Some side effects are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
    • Feeling sad or hopeless
    • Feeling anxious or restless
    • Having thoughts of hurting yourself (suicide)
    • Yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes
    • Dark urine
    • Light-colored stool
    • Loss of appetite
    • Nausea
  • Symptoms of lactic acidosis (too much lactic acid in the blood), such as:
    • Feeling tired or weak
    • Muscle pain
    • Trouble breathing
    • Abdominal (stomach) pain
    • Feeling cold
    • Cold or blue hands and feet
    • Dizziness or lightheadedness
    • A slow or irregular heartbeat
    • Persistent nausea, vomiting, and abdominal (stomach) pain
    • Shortness of breath
    • An enlarged or tender liver
    • Weight loss
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Unexplained swelling of the mouth or throat
    • Wheezing
    • Difficulty breathing or swallowing.
