Drug Interactions With Efavirenz

Many medications may cause drug interactions with efavirenz, including protease inhibitors, certain statin cholesterol medicines, and diltiazem. These interactions could reduce the effectiveness of the drugs or cause dangerous side effects (such as an irregular heart rhythm). Since drug interactions with efavirenz can be serious -- even life-threatening -- make sure you talk to your healthcare provider before taking any other medications.

 

Drug Interactions With Efavirenz: An Overview

Efavirenz (Sustiva®) can potentially interact with several other medicines. Some of the medicines that may lead to drug interactions with efavirenz include:
 
  • Bepridil (Vascor®)
  • Certain antibiotics and antifungal medications, such as:
 
    • Azithromycin (Zithromax®)
    • Clarithromycin (Biaxin®)
    • Fluconazole (Diflucan®)
    • Ketoconazole (Nizoral®)
    • Itraconazole (Sporanox®)
    • Rifabutin (Mycobutin®)
    • Rifampin (Rifadin®)
    • Voriconazole (Vfend®)
 
  • Certain benzodiazepine medications, such as:
 
 
  • Certain seizure medications, such as:
 
 
 
    • Bromocriptine (Parlodel®)
    • Dihydroergotamine (Migranal®)
    • Ergotamine (Bellamine S®, Cafergot®, Ergomar®)
