Drug Interactions With Didanosine (Cont.)

Didanosine Interactions Explained

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when didanosine is combined with any of the drugs listed above.

Alcohol
It is usually best to avoid alcoholic beverages while you are taking didanosine, as alcohol may increase the risk of dangerous didanosine side effects.

Allopurinol (Aloprim, Zyloprim)
Allopurinol can increase the level of didanosine in your blood, increasing your risk of didanosine side effects. In general, these medications should not be combined.

Antacids With Aluminum or Magnesium
Antacids that contain aluminum or magnesium may increase the risk of certain didanosine side effects. This interaction applies only to didanosine oral solution, not to didanosine capsules.

Certain Antifungal Medications
Didanosine oral solution (but not didanosine capsules) can decrease the absorption of certain antifungal medications into your body, perhaps making them less effective. Make sure to take these medications at least two hours apart in order to avoid this interaction.

Dapsone
Didanosine oral solution (but not didanosine capsules) can decrease the absorption of dapsone into your body, perhaps making it less effective. Make sure to take these medications at least two hours apart in order to avoid this interaction.

Delavirdine (Rescriptor)
Didanosine oral solution (but not didanosine capsules) can decrease the absorption of delavirdine into your body, perhaps making it less effective. Make sure to take delavirdine at least one hour before taking didanosine oral solution.

Fluoroquinolone Antibiotics
Didanosine oral solution (but not didanosine capsules) can decrease the absorption of fluoroquinolone antibiotics into your body, perhaps making them less effective. Make sure to take didanosine at least six hours before or two hours after taking a fluoroquinolone antibiotic.
