Recommendations for Didanosine Liquid and Treatment Tips

Didanosine Dosing Recommendations

Refer to the following table for didanosine oral solution (liquid) dosing recommendations for adults:
Preferred Didanosine Dosage
Alternative Didanosine Dosage
Less than 132 pounds
125 mg twice daily
200 mg once daily
132 pounds or more
200 mg twice daily

For children, your child's healthcare provider will determine the didanosine oral solution dose based on your child's age and body surface area (which is calculated using your child's height and weight). When treating children with didanosine, healthcare providers typically recommend using didanosine oral solution twice a day.
Your healthcare provider may recommend a lower didanosine dose if you have kidney disease, if you are taking certain other medications, or if you develop bothersome side effects.

General Didanosine Dosing Information

Some considerations for people taking didanosine include the following:
  • Didanosine comes in the form of delayed-release capsules and as an oral solution (liquid). It is usually taken by mouth once or twice a day.
  • It is very important that you take didanosine on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before or 2 hours after a meal.
  • Didanosine capsules must be swallowed whole. Do not chew, crush, or open didanosine capsules.
  • Try to take didanosine at the same time(s) every day to maintain an even level of the medication in your blood.
  • For the medication to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed. It is very important that you closely follow your healthcare provider's instructions for taking didanosine. Missing doses can increase the chance of the virus developing a resistance to didanosine (making it less effective).
  • If you are unsure about anything related to your didanosine dosage, please talk to your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.
